This website is operated by Erica Roberts (‘I’ or ‘me’) trading as ‘Discover Dutch’ and I provide Dutch private lessons on a part-time basis. I take your privacy very seriously therefore I urge you to read this policy very carefully because it contains important information about:

  • who I am
  • how and why I collect, store, use and share personal information
  • your rights in relation to your personal information, and
  • how to contact me and supervisory authorities in the event that you have a complaint.

1. Who I am


Erica Roberts (‘I’ or ‘me’) trading as ‘Discover Dutch’ collect, use and am responsible for certain personal information about you. When I do so I am regulated under the General Data Protection Regulations which apply across the European Union (including the United Kingdom) and I am responsible as ‘controller’ of that personal information for the purposes of those laws.


2. What information I collect and where it comes from


The personal information I request and collect is considered valid by data protection law. It might include your name, email address, postal address and telephone number.There are a number of ways I come into contact with your personal data. For example, when you use my website, call me or send me an email. Here’s a bit more detail on the ways in which I collect personal data:

  • If you contact me by email, phone or letter, I keep a record
  • During your first lesson I will ask you for your telephone number, address and email address
  • During your course, I will keep a handwritten record of your progress

3. Why I collect personal data from you


Data protection law says I am allowed to use personal information only if I have a proper reason to do so. The law says I must have one or more of these reasons:

  • To fulfil a contract I have with you, or
  • When it is our legal duty, or
  • When it is in our legitimate interest, or
  • When you consent to it

By law, whilst providing Dutch tuition, I have a legitimate interest to process data (except where your rights as a data subject override our legitimate interest).


4. How I use your information

  • To arrange lessons, make changes to lessons, to send homework or teaching materials. 
  • For administration purposes including invoicing

5. How your information is shared

I do not share your information with others, except if required to do so by law or as expressly permitted under applicable data protection legislation


6. How long I keep your information


I keep your information for no longer than necessary. Once you finish your course, all personal identifiable data will be destroyed, apart from the  data I am  required to keep by law, to comply with HMRC requirements in order to prepare my accounts.

7. How I protect your information


Your details will be kept in a password protected PC for the duration of your lessons. Only I have access to those records. Once you have finished your lessons with me, your details are deleted. Your details are not shared, analysed or sold to any third parties and its sole purpose is for contacting you about the lessons only.

Please be aware that the use of the Internet is not entirely secure and although I do our best to protect your personal data I cannot guarantee the security or integrity of any personal information, which is transferred from you or to you via the Internet/email. Transmission is at your own risk.

I may collect technical information relating to website usage, including your browser type or the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet
I may gather general information about the use of my website, such as which pages users visit most often and which services generate most interest. . Where possible we use aggregated or anonymous data which does not identify individual visitors to our website.

8. Paper copies


Paper copies containing personal data like invoices will be stored securely and only for as long as deemed necessary. On disposal they will be shredded.


9. Your rights

I am committed to making sure that anyone who does business with me is aware:

  • For what purpose their data is being processed
  • What types of disclosure is likely
  • How to exercise their rights in relation to the data

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/279 you have a number of rights relating to your data which can be exercised at any point:

  • Right of access – you can ask me to provide details of the data I hold on you
  • Right to object – you can ask me not to use your data in a particular way. 
  • Right to rectification – you can ask me to correct information or remove information if it’s no longer accurate. 
  • Right to be forgotten – you can ask me to erase your data. If you make this request, I will follow strict internal process to make sure your details are deleted or anonymised and that you are not contacted by me in future. This right is not absolute, as I may need to continue processing this information, for example, to comply with our legal obligations or for reasons of public interest.
  • Right to portability – you can ask me to transfer the data I have on you to another organisation

To act on your rights, please contact I’ll action your request as soon as reasonably possible, with no charge.
